About Us
FFR Cooperative was founded in 1961 to provide new and improved alfalfa genetics for seed producers and forage users. Research and development in other forage species were added in the 1960's. Soybean research was initiated in 1968 and three active corn breeding programs were consolidated into FFR to form the corn breeding project in 1970. The wheat testing and acquisition program was added in 1986.

Active breeding in soybean variety development was transferred to SOYGENETICS, LLC in 2000. As an owner of SOYGENETICS, FFR maintained access to soybean breeding and varieties until 2008 when SOYGENETICS was sold. Today, FFR conducts soybean yield trials for owners and partners, but is no longer involved in breeding.

FFR's corn breeding effort that was focused on breeding for silage usage and "southern" adaptability for grain is being phased down with some exciting inbred lines being finished for launch into the market. Efforts are underway to investigate breeding corn for biomass production using the silage germplasm that FFR has developed over the years.

FFR's alfalfa breeding program was merged into the Forage Genetics breeding program in the late 90's and FFR operated as a partner in that effort. In 2008, that breeding effort and western research station were transferred entirely to FGI.

Moving forward, FFR has partnered with Mendel Bioenergy Seeds to work together in the development of renewable fuels. Mendel Bioenergy Seeds has moved in to a portion of the FFR facilities at Lafayette and the two organizations work closely together in establishing field research activities.

Additionally, FFR has signed a partnership agreement to cooperate in field research activities with Syntech Research, a global research company providing field testing services in the development of new chemical products to protect and enhance crop production.

Today, FFR continues plant breeding in several forages crops along with agronomy services in many crops to its cooperatives and partners in support of their seed brands, research programs and agronomy services.
